NEW CRIME STOPPERS NUMBER LAUNCH

Tasmania joined mainland states and territories as the Crime Stoppers 1800 number made a transition to the national number of 1800 333 000.

The change over of the Crime Stoppers phone number was officially launched on Monday the 26th of March at Wrest Point Hotel Casino.

“The transition will see Tasmania move away from the 1800 005 555 phone number which has been used since Crime Stoppers commenced in the State in 1994,” said Crime Stoppers Tasmania Chairman, Mr Brian Aherne.

As a program focusing on crime prevention and crime solving, Crime Stoppers Tasmania will continue to create awareness in the Tasmanian community of specific criminal activity.

The new Crime Stoppers number will appear on all advertising and media reports, in addition to a fridge magnet which will be distributed through Australia Post to every household and business in the State.

Since its inception in Tasmania in 1994, Crime Stoppers has achieved the following outstanding results:

  • More than 28,160 telephone calls have been received,
  • More than 2,435 arrests have been made as a result of information received,
  • Over 13,065 serious charges laid,
  • $4.5 million worth of stolen/damaged property recovered, and
  • Over $3.6 million worth of drugs seized.

“Any person calling with information on 1800 333 000 can remain anonymous,” Mr Aherne said.

“Crime Stoppers doesn’t record personal details, only the information provided by the caller.”

Mr Aherne said members of the public can phone the Crime Stoppers number 24 hours a day seven days a week to provide information relating to crimes or drug offences.

“Members of the Tasmanian community do hear about crimes being committed or drug offences taking place,” he said.

“Crime Stoppers wants to continue to hear from those people in order to assist Tasmania Police in tackling crime and drug offences and, more particularly, assisting in continuing to make Tasmania a safe place to live.”

During a transition period, the original number will remain operational through linking into the new Crime Stoppers number.
