How safe is your car from theft?

How safe is your car from theft? Last year 1,644 cars were stolen in Tasmania . Although 1,438 were recovered, many were severely damaged, including being burned out. Others had valuable items stolen from them.

Neighbourhood Watch State President, Jan Dunsby, says that many cars are stolen simply because the owner has made the thief's job too easy. “ Some simple precautions may well stop someone from stealing your car. You would be surprised how many people leave the keys in the ignition and the window open whilst they go into their local store for the newspaper or other purchases” , she said. “ The majority of cars that are stolen are older models, and the best way to prevent this is to fit an engine immobiliser . If you really can't afford an immobiliser, then use a good quality steering wheel lock.

Other precautions against car theft include parking it in your garage, if you have one, or at least in the driveway. If you have to park your car on the street, try to make sure there is good street lighting.
